Canine Influenza

If you were one of the unfortunate people who contracted the flu this winter, you know first hand how debilitating the Influenza virus can be. But did you know that dogs can catch the flu too? The Canine Influenza virus (CIV) has been isolated worldwide with several cases throughout the United States. High case numbers have been seen in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, and Florida. There are two main strains of Canine Influenza: H3N2 and H3N8. The H3N2 strain is thought to originate from an Asian strain of bird flu while the H3N8 strain is thought to originate from a strain of horse flu.

Risk of CIV is greatest in metropolitan areas where high populations of people and their pets live. Transmission of CIV occurs in places or business with many dogs moving through, for example: grooming facilities, boarding centers, dog parks, dog shows, even the veterinary office. The virus can move from one dog to another through nose-to-mouth contact or even through sniffing or licking an item that an
infected dog has coughed on.

The CIV can vary in severity. Mild cases may present as coughing, sneezing, ocular or nasal discharge, or no clinical signs at all. Severe cases may present with fever, inappetence, lethargy, dehydration, respiratory distress, pneumonia, sepsis, or death. For this reason, it is very important that your dog receive an annual flu vaccination before exposure occurs. Talk to your veterinarian about the risks associated with your pet’s lifestyle and how you can get them vaccinated against this highly contagious
disease.
